General Election Manifesto 2024

21st October 2024

We ask that all political parties’ manifestos include their support for our campaign to amend the ISL Act in 2025 and for its full implementation. That they commit to meaningful engagement and funding for Disabled Person Organisations (DPO’s) under UN CRPD.
We ask that all candidates commit to:
We need your support for IDS proposed amendments to the ISL Act
IDS are campaigning to amend the current ISL Act and have prepared submissions in advance of the 5-year review to be carried out by the NDA in 2025. Please include this in your party’s election manifesto.
Work to implement the ISL Act – Full implementation now
National Disability Authority’s (NDA) Report on the Operation of the Irish Sign Language Act, published in 2023, states that 52% of public bodies are not aware of the ISL Act or not aware of their obligations under the Act and this is a huge concern for the IDS and the Deaf community. The Government must develop a short- and long-term plan to increase the shortage and standards of ISL interpreters.
Meaningful Engagement with DPO’s – No more tokenism
Support positive change and engage with the Deaf community through the recognition and funding of Disabled Persons’ Organisations (DPOs).
Follow UNCRPD – Rights not welfare
Uphold the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) including the optional protocol, ensuring full inclusion and accessibility based on the human rights and social models of disability. Services for Deaf people must be on an equality basis.
